Because of her 100 towers Bologna was called "the towered city". Nowadays there are still 22 and "Two Towers", Asinelli and Garisenda, are the most famous. Garisenda tower is lower and leans seemly almost to fall down. Asinelli tower is next to her, slender, highest, unsurpassed.
Asinelli tower is the symbol of Bologna, it’s 97.2 m height and is the highest medieval tower in Europe. It leans 2.2m and you have to climb it by 498 woody steps. From the top you can enjoy a beautiful view of the city and the hills.
The tower is 900 years old. A legend tells about a competition between two family, Garisendi and Asinelli, that to demonstrate who’s the richest one they challenges to build the highest tower of the city.
Realistically it was wanted at about 1100 by Matilde di Canossa as a watchtower. Before was built Garisenda tower, but it tilted during the construction and was cut. After on broader and more solid foundations was built the Asinelli one maybe even higher than is today. After several events, in XIV century the City of Bologna became owner.
